Central Illinois Hosts September Eat Local Challenge
Updated: Aug 21, 2019
Central Illinois Buy Fresh Buy Local is launching the September Eat Local Challenge next month. The challenge features a regional scavenger hunt with a chance to win $200 at any IL Buy Fresh Buy Local farm or food venue. Participants local to Central Illinois can download the Scavify app and join the hunt (Eat Local Challenge) any time between September 1 and September 30th. By downloading Scavify and joining the hunt, participants will be automatically subscribed to weekly emails during the month of September featuring delicious seasonal recipes, stories about local farmers, resources to help you buy local, and a list of food and farm events happening across Central Illinois.
Buy Fresh Buy Local Central IL, a program of the IL Stewardship Alliance, shares that September is the most abundant time of the year in the region. During September, find warm season crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peaches, alongside cool season crops likes apples, carrots, and winter squash. Unfortunately, despite the abundance, attendance and sales at farmers markets typically drop off during the month. By committing to buying locally in September, Eat Local Challenge participants will not only have the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of fresh produce and proteins (often at the best prices), but will also help small farmers in the area continue to earn income that will keep them afloat during the winter months.
